How do I avoid scams on HouseMAXX or RentMAXX?

While most individuals who use HouseMAXX and RentMAXX have success with selling and renting, from time to time we do receive reports of people attempting to scam our users. It's very important to use common sense online; here are some tips while using HouseMAXX and RentMAXX:

• Deal with people locally that you can meet - follow this one simple rule and you will avoid 99% of the scam attempts on HouseMAXX or RentMAXX.
• Never, ever wire funds via Western Union, Money grams, etc... Or any other wire service - it's a scam.
• Fake cashier checks and money orders are common and banks will cash them and then hold you responsible when the fake is discovered weeks later.
• HouseMAXX or RentMAXX is not involved in any rental transactions and does not handle leases, guarantee rental transactions, provide escrow services, or offer "buyer protection" or "seller certification"
• Never give out highly sensitive financial information (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.)
• Use common sense, if it is too good to be true, it probably is

Recognizing popular scams

1. Someone claims that HouseMAXX or RentMAXX will guarantee a transaction, certifies a buyer/seller, OR claims that HouseMAXX or RentMAXX will handle or provide protection for a payment:
   • These claims are fraudulent, as HouseMAXX or RentMAXX does not have any role in any transaction.
   • Scammer will often send an official looking email that appears to come from HouseMAXX or RentMAXX, offering a guarantee, certifying a seller, providing payment services -- all such emails are fakes!
2. Distant person offers a genuine-looking (but fake) cashier's check:
   • you receive an email offering to buy your item, or rent your apartment, sight unseen.
   • cashier's check is offered for your sale item, as a deposit for an apartment, or for your services.
   • value of cashier's check often far exceeds your item - scammer offers to "trust" you, and asks you to wire the balance via money transfer service
   • banks will often cash these fake checks AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE CHECK FAILS TO CLEAR, including criminal prosecution in some cases!
   • scam often involves a 3rd party (shipping agent, business associate owing buyer money, etc)
3. Someone requests wire service payment via Western Union or Money Gram:
   • Often claim that an MTCN or confirmation code is needed before he can withdraw your money - this is FALSE, once you've wired money, it is GONE.
   • Common countries currently include: Nigeria, Romania, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Spain, Italy, Netherlands - but could be anywhere
   • Apartment listing may be local, but landlord/owner is "travelling" or "relocating" and needs you to wire money to them abroad
   • Deal often seems too good to be true, price is too low, rent is below market, etc
4. Distant person offers to send you a money order and then have you wire money:
   • this is ALWAYS a scam, in our experience - the cashier's check is FAKE
   • sometimes accompanies an offer of merchandise, sometimes not
   • scammer often asks for your name, address, etc for printing on the fake check
   • deal often seems too good to be true
5. Distant seller suggests use of an online escrow service:
   • most online escrow sites are FRAUDULENT, operated by scammers
   • for more info, do a Google search on "fake escrow" or "escrow fraud"

How do I search for rental listings?

To start a new search, start from HouseMAXX or RentMAXX home page or the buying, selling or renting links. Select the search criteria that most applies to your search needs; each selection will generate search results that most apply to your preferences. Or use the map function on the homepage supported by Google.

Why doesn't HouseMAXX or RentMAXX have any sale or rental listings in the area I am interested in?

Our search and database is set up that only listings appear that are actually on teh website. A new listing will appear in a city or area once a seller lists their property in that area. Please check back with us in the future as new listings come onto the website each week.

How do I contact the owner once I am interested in a rental listing?

1. Call the owner once you are interested in the property.
2. Email the individual directly from HouseMAXX or RentMAXX by clicking 'contact now' on the property's detail page.
3. Email the individual later, at your convenience.

Be sure to provide your contact information so the owner can call you back ASAP.

How do I list with HouseMAXX or RentMAXX?

To list with HouseMAXX or RentMAXX, simply go to "SELLING" or "RENTING" a property to create an account. This will take you approximately 1 minute and your property will be approved within 24 hours. From there, you can add all your amenities and add details and upload photos.

How do I get my password again, I forgot it?

If you have forgotten your password, simply go to forgot password on the login screen and click 'forgot password' and we will email your password to you immediately

How do I sign into my account on HouseMAXX or RentMAXX?

To sign into your HouseMAXX or RentMAXX account, simply click 'LOGON' on the HouseMAXX or RentMAXX home page. You'll be asked to submit your HouseMAXX or RentMAXX username and password and then you'll arrive at your personalized HouseMAXX or RentMAXX home page where you can manage your listings and personal information.

How do I sign off from my account on HouseMAXX or RentMAXX?

To sign off on HouseMAXX or RentMAXX, simply click 'Log Off' on the top right hand side of the page. It is recommended to do this to protect your privacy after each session.
